The anticipated dates for Deputy Recruit - Certified testing will be: January 2nd, 2026 and January 9th, 2026. Salary to commensurate with qualifications. The Sheriff's Office provides public safety at all times and therefore every position is deemed essential. All positions are in-person and not eligible for remote work. Every position is also subject to recall based on the needs of the Office to keep the community safe.
This position has an anticipated work schedule of: 10-hour shifts, 4 days a week: Shift I: 12:10am - 10:10am Shift II: 5:00am - 3:00pm Shift III: 9:45am - 7:45pm Shift IV: 2:35pm - 12:35am Shift V: 7:20pm - 5:20am subject to change. Responsible for attendance in and successful completion of the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) Peace Officer Standards Training (POST) Certified Academy. Performs duties and responsibilities associated with POST and policy driven mandates to include Arrest Control, Driving, Firearms, Physical Fitness, and classroom instruction. Responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates and staff at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center (CJC). Performs duties necessary to ensure safety and welfare of inmates and staff. Resolves and controls inmate crises through prevention and intervention/observation. Provides counseling, guidance, and direction for questions and acceptable inmate behavior. Enforces federal laws, state laws, and county ordinances and codes. Patrols an assigned district. Enforces applicable civil statutes; answers service calls, conducts criminal investigations; issues summons and complaints, files cases with the District Attorney's Office and testifies in court. This position is part of the Deputy Sheriff career progression series, which includes Deputy Recruit and Deputy Sheriff. An employee is eligible to advance to the next position within the series when the employee has met the criteria for advancement as notated within the job description and has received a recommendation from the Hiring Authority.
Performs duties and responsibilities associated with policy driven mandates to include Arrest Control, Firearms, Physical Fitness, and Classroom Instruction. Designees are expected to pass both written and practical exams to determine their comprehension and skills of the presented course work. Provides accurate and timely feedback to instructors and training staff.
Performs first-line supervision over inmates. Maintains care, custody, control, and strict accountability of inmates. Conducts timely security and welfare checks of inmates and areas of responsibility.
Prepares detailed incident reports, ward logs, property supplements, inter-office memorandums, and other forms.
Responds to inmate questions and provides information on topics concerning the judicial process, facility rules and procedures, and referrals to social agencies, if appropriate.
Inspects physical area within responsibility and reports safety, security, sanitation, fire, or maintenance deficiencies.
Communicates with the central control room and other offices via two-way radio, and telephone.
Conducts inventories of assigned equipment and supplies and inspects for signs of tampering. Supervises the cleaning of assigned areas.
Performs searches of inmates' person, possessions, and quarters.
Monitors inmates' visits with attorneys, bondsmen, and other persons. Escorts inmates throughout facility. Collects and distributes all correspondence from and to assigned inmates.
Supervises the issuance of inmate meals and eating utensils, accounts for utensils. Supervises the issuance and exchange of inmate linen and laundry.
Answers service calls for an assigned district and takes appropriate enforcement action or conducts follow-up investigation, as appropriate. Patrols the County to detect illegal activities; assists citizens involved in traffic accidents; ensures the safety and security of citizens by making arrests, quieting disturbances, and using physical and/or deadly force as required.
Pursues fleeing suspects or prisoners on foot or vehicle; climbs, crawls, jumps and runs to pursue suspects and protect life; pushes/pulls, lifts, or carries persons or suspects/prisoners who may be injured, unconscious or incapacitated; effects forceful arrests.
Processes crime scenes by fingerprinting, photographing, identifying, packaging, and processing evidence.
Writes and files reports by gathering facts, statements, and evidence; prepares and files affidavits.
Enforces traffic codes and regulations; writes traffic summons, as appropriate, including DUI enforcement.
Testifies in court on matters relating to criminal offenses, traffic, and civil matters.
Serves summons, complaints, warrants, and civil processes.
Contacts citizens and businesses in assigned district to identify ongoing problems and recommend solutions for resolution.
Attends briefings to become aware of any incidents occurring since previous duty assignment. Reports any critical incidents occurring within the assigned patrol district to Shift Sergeant.
Assists other Deputies on service calls when necessary.
Performs other duties as required.
